Naan Vegetarian!

I would like everybody gothrough the article in the above link before I actually start....

I have always wondered why am I not a non vegetarian and infact questioned my mom also during my childhood. She like all other mothers answered

"Kanna, it is a sin to kill another life and eat that. Saami Kanna kuthidum!"

I used to wonder "Then why do we kill plants and eat? dont plants have life?" then consoled myself after a few years thinking that killing a one sense living being is better than killing a 5 sense creature. Not sure kareeta thappa nu... still hunting for an answer!

Buddissim is one of the relegions which propogates stict vegetarianism...A story in one of the Sutras goes like this. "A king of heaven was stalemated in a war with a demon, and neither side emerged as winner. As the king of heaven was leading his soldiers back, he saw the nest of a golden-winged bird in a tree by the roadside. "If the soldiers and chariots pass by here, the eggs in the nest will certainly fall to the ground and be scattered," he thought to himself. So he led his thousand chariots back the same road by which they came. When the demon saw the king of heaven returning, he fled in terror.

The sutra's conclusion was that "if you use mercy to seek salvation, the lord of heaven will see it." This story tells us that mercy may not seem like much at first glance, but it is in fact extremely powerful. The Buddhist sutras frequently mention "the power of mercy," from this we know that mercy is indeed a potent force. If a Buddhist wants to learn to use this strength of mercy, he must be like the king of heaven in this story, and be ready to change the route of a thousand chariots rather than let a nest full of bird eggs fall to the ground.

The Surangama Sutra tells us that "if we eat the flesh of living creatures, we are destroying the seeds of compassion." Infact I have heard that Buddist/Jain monks resist from taking antibiotics as it would kill the germs in their body.... There is a long way for mankind to go to that extent. Infact it is not required also.... But atleast we can resist from killing poor hens, goats, cows, etc., for their meat...

Hinduism is also a religion which preaches vegetarianism, as a way to live with a minimum of hurt to other beings, for to consume meat, fish, fowl or eggs is to participate indirectly in acts of cruelty and violence against the animal kingdom.

We would have heard of lot of Siddhas who have lived for more than 100 years taking in Air as their food..... They have left back a lot of gyan as to make "Unavey marundhu" and prevent the happening "Marundhey Unavu"..... Nobody infact bothers about them also...

But today's Pizza centers, fast food corners, restaurants, etc., remain first hand centers to perform this butchering...

There is another side to this coin also...

1)People say that we get the vitamins, minerals, etc., which is absent in vegetarian diet by having fish, eggs, meat, etc., Could be! I dont deny the thought.
2)There would not be ecological balance. Animals would increase in number than mankind... As if it is lesser than mankind now!
3)God has created them for Man to enjoy!

But there has to be some difference between Barbarians and Civilized people. Today i think the gap is reducing day by day....

Dr. Walsh once said that "To prevent human bloodshed one must start at the dinner table."

Being a vegetarian or non vegetarian is just a personal choice that individuals make (which has nothing to do with good or bad) as any other choice.

As with most other social practices, just to proof ones choice to be best than another, people (one group) make the other person’s (other group) choice bad / wrong. Thought it has nothing to do with one being good or bad. Thy perception is, it is a very unfair to say people who take non vegetarian are doing a great mistake (by killing or whatever argument), where as people who take vegetarian food are the wise and nicest people, and are healthy etc. Just mind ones business, if you don’t want it don’t do it.

Ok, now to add a few points to your thoughts, food habits are something to do with lot of things like geography, availability, adaptation, opportunity … options etc. Let’s forget about humans [so called animals with six senses for now ;)], a level below when a lion hunts a deer it is not wrong or sin and you can’t say it is good. For a very simple reason it has nothing to do with good / bad, it is nature. That’s how they have been designed (a technical term to put it). Don’t think elephant is going sell vegetarianism to the lion, simple because they are five sensed ;).

So, being a vegetarian or non vegetarian is a personal choice that people make (mmh, something like what one likes to wear) which has nothing to do with good or bad.

Note: Again, stop playing the blame game, why crib on fast food [no fast food owner is going to kill if people don’t eat there; it is you and me who make the choice what we EAT]. Also animals where hunted for years not just for food, but for sear pleasure and sport, so let’s spare the fast food folks here :-D
